End of the experiment

I’m going to wrap up this experimental severe weather blog for the evening; updates will be posted as warranted over at duluthnewstribune.com, and on the DNT Facebook and Twitter (@duluthnews) pages.

Right now the main concern is the potential for flooding as a “train” of storms moves across southern parts of the Northland, including parts of Cass, Crow Wing, Aitkin and Carlton counties. A flood advisory is in effect for those areas, for the potential of flooding in urban areas and along streams and rivers, until 5:15 a.m.

Thanks for reading; see you, in some form, the next time severe storms threaten the Northland.

Flood advisories…

I spoke a little too soon – some flood advisories (less severe than flash flood warnings) have been issued for parts of the Northland, though not Duluth. More details shortly

Heavy rain in southern parts of the Northland

Several rounds of thunderstorms have been moving across southern Cass County on over toward Brainerd during these late-night hours. There aren’t any new flood advisories at this time (11:20 p.m.) for these storms, but the rainfall certainly could add up. It looks like these recurring storms will mostly stay south of the Twin Ports – but Carlton and Pine counties may see a few more rounds of storms overnight.

More storms – but no flood advisories at this time

There are some more storms building off to the west – a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the Detroit Lakes area – so the Northland may continue to see some thunderstorms during the overnight hours.

At this time (10:50 p.m.) the Weather Service has made no mention of any flood or flash flood watches, warnings or advisories – while the rain won’t help cleanup of last month’s flooding, it does not appear that it will cause widespread new flooding tonight – though a few locations have picked up impressive rain totals (Marcell – 2.25 inches of rain in an hour earlier tonight)
